Recently watched this. From the Noir Classics box set. Not bad, not great. Some nice scenes with San Francisco landmarks. The cops are a little wooden. Eli Wallach is pure evil.

Watched it just last week. The DVD commentary track-- film noir expert Eddie Muller and (hilariously obscene and possibly not exactly sober)L A Confidential author James Elroy-- is worth the price of admission. Even better is their commentary track on "Crime Wave" if you can get hold of it.
