Judy Henske - Queen of the Beatniks

I don't know too much about Judy Henske. The Folk aspects of beatnik culture, I'm not too knowledgeable about. She was a folk singer dubbed The Queen Of The Beatniks. Along with Juliette Greco she seems to have driven home the black bob with bangs as thee look for beatnik chicks. Check out this video of here performing Wade In The Water. Powerful voice.
You have to click on the video to open it in another website, unfortunately.

Henske has some great material in her catalog. Well worth checking out. Inclusion of "show tunes" on some of her LPs (no doubt a record company idea) hampers consistency, but she was/is far grittier and more bluesy than her contemporaries.
Check out her version of "High Flying Bird"...proto-folk-rock for sure.

I tried to give you this award as I like reading your site(s).

But it bounced back. Probably I did something wrong, but I'll give it a go-go again.

Best

I think Judy's actually wearing a wig in that shot. She had long hair. She was famously tall and rather raunchy and rowdy, though very personable. Much loved in the folkie/beat world. A big influence on Janis Joplin. She's still alive and recording as recently as the 90s.

I would beg to differ. Phillipa Fallon is the true Queen on the Beats.
