Odd. There was a fairly well-known "Coffee and Confusion" here in San Francisco (North Beach) at 1339 Grant Street. But I am 90% sure this is photo is not that joint.
I've come across the name - but never a photo - a several times these past few years. Assuming there weren't two venues with the same name, your Coffee 'n Confusion was in Washington, DC. I know Jill Jonnes (no typo there) writes about it in her Hep-cats, Narcs, and Pipe Dreams (Johns Hopkins University Press, 1999). Don't know what she has to say... haven't got around to buying a copy.
Thanks for chiming in guys. Brian, love the Dusty Bookcase blog! I've added a link for you. Cool to see Canadian pulps. I'll keep on the lookout for some.
I agree with the guy who said the front of the coffeehouse in that picture doesn't look right--I worked at the one in San Francisco in 1967--I ran the lights and waited tables while my boyfriend played guitar. Maybe that picture is of the other one--I didn't even know til now there WAS another one. Anyone know what happened to Steve Trosberg? Thanks, Diane
