Jazz Pulps

Make Your Own Goatee

A little over a year ago, Brantford had it's first annual jazz fest in the newly finished Harmony Square downtown. It was a great success and at the Brantford Arts Block we had a beatnik themed coffee house type of thing going on, I dj'd jazz and beat novelties, we had poetry readings and screened some films. My friend Robbie P. created some create your own goatee crafts for the kids. I tried putting these up back then but had a bunch of trouble with google and I only recently came across them again, so in the spirit of Halloween and beatnik costumes, here it is.

Beats On TV (Halloween Special) - The Munsters - Season 1 Episode 26 - Far Out Munsters

Now that Thanksgiving is good and finished here in Canada, I can focus on
Halloween, which is right around the corner, and where better to start than
with the first family of monster comedy. It was 1964 and some of the coolest
rock bands were turning up on tv shows everywhere to promote themselves.
In this episode of The Munsters, Eddie has discovered The Standells, slightly
before they grew their hair out and started singing about the dirty water
of the river Charles. The Standells are in town and are looking for a place to
stay, but they have a habit of wrecking hotel rooms and their reputation has
preceded them. Their manager manages to rent a house...the Munsters house
for them to stay in while they are in town. They proceed to throw a party that
all the local beatniks show up to and after a couple of songs, the poetry
readings start, about this time, the Munsters, fed up with their fancy digs at
a downtown hotel, return home and get into the act themselves.
Also features an appearance by Zalman King, who many might recognize from
such drive-in classics as Blue Sunshine and Trip With The Teacher.

"What would the neighbors think if the saw a bunch of strange looking people
living in our home ?"

Dragula

"Did you dig that crazy get-up? Man is that way out."
"Did you see the hair-do on the tall one? It's the greatest thing since...Carl Sandberg."

"Come on and ringo!"

"The Hermit's gonna groove us!"

"Let's here from the Jolly Green Giant!"

Beatnik Frankenstein

Well...sort of. I know Halloween is coming soon and everyone is pretty excited about it, but here in Canada, we have Thanksgiving first and I just can't get my headspace past that smoked Turkey that I will be tucking into on Monday. I've got some cool beatnik Halloween stuff planned but for now here's a picture of a beat looking Frankie from a Santo film.

My Daughter Is A Beatnik - Jean Carroll

Jean Carroll was a jewish comedienne born in Paris, France in 1911. She got
started early on in Vaudville routines and eventually became a well known
American stand up comic. Here she is riffing on beatniks from her 1960 album
"Girl In A Hot Steam Bath".
