Odds Against Tomorrow OST - The Modern Jazz Quartet

Beautiful sparse and atmospheric score for 1959's Odds Against Tomorrow by the Modern Jazz Quartet. Very hip. Get it here.

Odds Against Tomorrow - Robert Wise - 1959

Odds against tomorrow is a nail biter about a group of men out to pull off the perfect caper, set in a cold and windy, wintry New York. problem is, one of them is a white southern boy with racist tendencies and one of the others is a black jazz musician. The racial issues can't be avoided. Will the men learn to trust one another or will hatred destroy them ? This is a story that, sadly, still hits home today. In the end we're all the same.
There is a really cool jazz soundtrack to this by The Modern Jazz Quartet. I'm hoping to manage to rip it tomorrow and put it up here. Harry Belafonte also performs a great song, which I'm assuming is called Cold Cold Sun which isn't on the OST. You can listen to it below.

"I thought you was deef."

"You hear that wind ? Man, I'm gonna get myself drummed outta the air force, ain't gonna fly a crate like this no more."

"I got an idea, Slater. How would you like to pick up $50,000 all in small bills, just for yourself ?"

"Do you have to stay over night, or do you want to stay over night ?"

"You don't have to do this job if you don't want to. If you don't like it, you just don't do it. There's no hurry."

6:03 pm in Melton

"Now here's the set up. That side door is the key to whole job."

Cold Cold Sun

"All men are evil !"

"He's been makin' crazy like that for hours, like someone slipped the leash or sumthin'."

"Did you say sumthin' to me , pal ?"

"Do you know what that louse of a husband of mine did ? When I told him I couldn't get a sitter, he decided to just go out with one of the boys."

Accident at South 7th street.

Contemplating the job at hand.

"I don't know what's worse, the atomic bomb or you kids and your hot rods."

Bang !  Bang !

"Well what do you know, he ain't gonna talk now."

BOOOM !!

"Here's the two that did it."
"Which one is which ?"

A Hole In The Head - Frank Capra - 1959

Unexpected hipster #4 is Carolyn Jones in "A Hole In The Head" by Frank Capra. Jones plays Frank Sinatra's wacky tenant and fun time girl, Shirl.

As it turns out, she's the only reason to watch this film. I actually didn't get to far into it, because I had a gutful of this irritating ginger kid who is pretty much the main character....

...and I just jumped to all the parts with Shirl...*sigh*
Shirl sunbathes...
...and plays bongos along with her jazz records in the window sill of her room at "The Garden Of Eden"....

...and she appears to like the kid about as much as I do....
....so she makes for splitsville part way through. She was too much woman for Sinatra anyway...and I quit watching about the same time.

Shirl was one of the earliest beatnik characters in the movies and Carolyn Jones later complained that Shirl was so well liked that she became typecast as "kooky".

Film Noir Video Game - Coming Soon

Finally !  I have to admit to being a bit of a video game junky and having just recently bought a PS3, I started doing a little searching for interesting games and discovered "L.A. Noire". From what I've read it's been put on hold since 2007 but seems to be getting some interest lately and according to Playstation Magazine the ETA is now sometime in 2010. It's being done by Rockstar Games, who brought you the Grand Theft Auto series and Red Dead Revolver, among others. I've read that it will be one of the most costly games to date. I don't know, it looks pretty nice so far and sounds like a cool jazz soundtrack. Here are some screens, go watch the trailer here. Can't wait to play.
