Proof that the "dramedy" wasen't solely a device of
television writers of the 70's. This is an odd episode
of Petticoat Junction, one with real conflict. and features
a guest appearance by Dennis Hopper as Alan Landman of
New York City.
Bobbie Joe comes home from school in Hooterville
one day with a boy she met at the Library. He's from New
York City and is passing through on his way to New Orleans.
Bobbie falls pretty hard for him, he's a rebel and a poet and
he has ideas. "He sees the hypocrisy in society and he speaks
out against it." It's not long before he insults their simple way
of life after a cool poetry reading, which you can listen too
below, and plans to leave and send for BJ when he gets to New
Orleans and Kate has to employ some unorthodox methods to
make Bobbie Joe see that Alan is the real hypocrite.
Walking home from Hooterville
"I wanted you to meet my sisters and my mom and uncle Joe."
"NO, not that family bit. I mean, all that warm, friendly, small talk
just turns me right off."
"Are you the boy from New York City ?"
"Greenwich Villiage."
"Ohhh, Bobbie Joe said New York, you know she never
gets anything right."
"What kind of poetry do you write ?"
"My poetry is, um, a cry of anguish in the
tortured night."
"Listen, this is strictly nowhere. You've got alot of sick,
old-fashioned ideas about working hard and living clean
and it's all alot of junk !"
"Listen to this one mister Stanford. Rollo dog food is never gummy,
can't form a ball in your puppies tummy, Rollo dog food is dog-gone
yummy !"
"Mmm, it has human appeal but, speaking from the dogs viewpoint, it doesn't
make my tail wag."

There's a big connection between the Beats & the Hippie Movement. I hope you've had a chance to read the novel "Junkie". It a good read.
Like everything else on the webnet, you find great things when you keep you eyes and ears open. Your site is one of those I found by accident, but you can be sure I'll be back, in fact I'll subscribe. This Hopper on PJ is so great. I was a fan ofr Petticoat Junction as a kid (it was a great spinoff of Beverly Hillbillies which I also loved back then ...)I was too young to know Hopper in those days. Nice to think I would have 'dug' this anyway.
