All Night Long - Basil Deardon - 1962

Imagine a noir take on Shakespeare's Othello set in a swanky London apartment with a live jazz score featuring some of the greatest musicians of the time. That's what you've got here with All Night Long starring Patrick McGoohan, Keith Mitchell, Paul Harris and more in this tale of a conniving drummer (McGoohan) who will stop at nothing to get what he needs to start his own band, even if it means breaking up his friends marriage and getting people addicted to drugs.

Several cameos by famous jazz musicians, Dave Brubeck, Charles Mingus, John Dankworth, Tubby Hayes and more, make this a really interesting film as they provide the entire soundtrack throughout the course of the film. There is a particularly smoking bongo set by a Brazilian drummer called, simply, Paco. I have no idea who this is, I thought it might be Dom Romeo but I don't know. does anybody else know ? He isn't credited on IMDB, but I'd love to find out. Seek this one out jazz lovers. I only wish I had the soundtrack to share.

"Hope you don't mind, man. I just walked in."

"How's Rex feel about this ?"
"What's the difference ?"
"What's the difference ? His drummer's forming his own band, his wife is gonna sing with his drummer, a competitor and you ask me what's the difference ?"

Happy Anniversary Delia and Rex

Toot!

Dave Brubeck

"Rex doesn't want her to sing, okay ? Not even with his own band. Maybe he doesn't want their marriage in the limelight, I wouldn't know, but I do know that Delia is an artist, one day, she's gonna go back to work, when she does, they'll bounce apart, they're through !"

"Why don't you tape the session ?"

BANG !

BOP!

BAP!

SAMBA!

RATATATAT !

"Bravo, Bravisimo !"

Dave & Charlie

"What have you done to me ? WHAT HAVE YOU DONE TO ME ?!"

"Johnny's a liar. He always was, he's a liar ! He never tells the truth in his whole life, his whole miserable life !"

"But Johnny, but johnny, I love you, I love you. I love, you love, she loves, everybody loves everybody , well I don't, see ? I love nobody, I don't even love Johnny. Get out Emily. Go find somebody else to love."

What a great looking movie...too badd it seems to be unavailable on DVD. At least thru legit channels. Oh well! Great screen shots too. I bet the soundtrack is amazing.

There is another musical film treatment of Othello - the rarely seen rock opera Catch My Soul -- directed by none other than Patrick McGoohan.

TCM showed it on a Friday nite not too long ago.

Here's something else cinematic that is right up your alley:
