I've been captivated by the character of the jive talkin' hep cat since quite a young age. I think the first incidence being when I saw "The Wild One" for the first time. I thought it would just be a biker film, an early one, but bikers just the same. Who knew bikers dug jazz. I saw it on TV and a couple of years later when video cassettes were becoming fairly prominant, I can remember dragging my parents around to rental stores in order to find a copy so that I could see the "Rebop scene" again.
"Unexpected" probably isn't the best term to describe the hipster characters in "The Wild One" since they are the main focus of the movie, but it's come to represent the type of character I'm talking about here. They show up all the time when you least expect them, in movies and TV and can add anything from a little comic relief to a source of wanton abandon and rebellion. I'll cover more of these characters in future "Unexpected Hipster" posts, for now, dig this little collection of scenes from "The Wild One", including the "Rebop" scene

That is hilarious - I have yet to see "The Wild Ones" and had no idea. I'd love to see more unexpected hipsters.
How about Sgt. Oddball in "Kelly's Heros" - his whole squad of hipsters (or would that be hippies) were pretty unexpected in a WW2 film.
