The Bribe - Robert Z. Leonard - 1949

...An island off the coast of Central America...

Well, here's the storm, right on schedule. Could be a break at that. Gives you time...yeah...time to think...

How do you like your thoughts ? How do you like finding out that maybe you've got a price tag too ? After all these years. How much do you cost, Rigby ? How much for you ? Or, would you rather use another word for what you're selling out, one with a fancy necktie on it, say...honour

Two suspects on your list, two only, so you went looking for them.

Hinton, Elizabeth Hinton it said on the list. Entertainer at "Pedros". Unknown quantity.

About what you expected. Easy would do it...very easy.

Pie shape was up early. You already checked on him some, very little on him. Name - Bealer, J.J. Bealer, all the earmarks of a small time grifter.

"You know, there's a lot to be said for, simply, being comfortable."

"I'm spoiled, you're careful. We sound like a couple of Dick Tracy characters."

"You could be a guy who collects $10,000. Just to leave this stinkin' town."

And for the first time in your life, you didn't like feeling like a cop. Those people at the tag end of the deal were softening you up.

"That's you problem, Hinton. You talk to much....You talk yourself to death !"

"Your Hand..."
"Yeah, I got it caught in a broken promise."

"Looks like everybody is wearing somebody else's voice"

"I'm taking that plane. I'm walking out this door. You won't shoot, you don't operate that way...you can't."

A gutfull of lead at the fireworks display
